Why do people fail to compromise?

July 18th, 2009

compromiseOne of the important factors of any relationship is the ability for people to compromise.

We all have personal interests that we strive towards and we have things that we can give up. It’s the art of giving into things that we can do without for someone we care about. Relationships for the most part end because of the lack of compromise.

Why is this the case? Why do people fail to compromise things for their significant other and end their relationship?

I have a few insights…..

The top 3 reasons why people fail to compromise

1. Tolerance - people come to a point where their personal well being is more important than their partners. They can only sacrifice things for certain period of time before people get fed up.

2. You’re completely wrong - People fail to compromise when the other person they are trying to negotiate with is completely wrong.  Think about it, how could you give up something for someone knowing that what you’re getting or have to do doesn’t make sense.

3. Values - If the proposed compromise goes against a persons values and beliefs they are not going to negotiate easily.

Conclusion

Compromising with your partner can lead to a successful relationship. However, it’s not always easy to meet your partner half way. The 3 reasons why people fail to compromise are listed above. If you stay away from these reasons, it will increase your chances to come to a successful agreement between you two.
