Fake it ’till you make it

September 17th, 2009

truth-and-hypeA lot of people when they first start out dating they tend to bend the truth. They say things that are not always a complete representation of reality so they can impress the person they’re with.

To embellish the truth, you might say you help the homeless, but just talking to a homeless person while the pedestrian sign is red and you have nothing to do isn’t the same. You might say you’re a sales manager managing a multimillion dollar account but you’re just the AR clerk that writes down the general ledger entries. We all want to impress people at the beginning even if it’s embellishing the truth a little.

Why do people do this? Why do people hype themselves up and portray themselves as a person that they know doesn’t exist. It’s easy. Because that person COULD exist. People do it because it sounds good and embellishing isn’t that far from the truth. If you know you’re eventually going to realize the potential of your embellishment  it provides a justification that you can tell the person a little white minuscule lie to tie them over until your stretch of the truth becomes realized.

My view on this is if it’s something really small it’s okay to embellish. But if it’s something big that may cause the person you’re with to get angry if you get caught then you should always be truthful. The moment you lose someone’s trust, it’s going to take a heck of a time to re-gain it.

If you can accept the consequences of being caught with your little white lie. By all means, keep helping the homeless and managing those multimillion dollar accounts!
